How to Use SVG Files with Cricut – A Beginner’s Step-by-Step Guide

So you’ve downloaded a beautiful SVG file — now what?

Whether you’re brand new to Cricut or just need a quick refresher, this guide walks you through how to upload, cut, and create magic with your SVG files.

✅ What You’ll Need:

  • Cricut machine (like Explore Air, Maker, or Joy)

  • Cricut Design Space (free software)

  • Your downloaded SVG file (from Mami Makes SVGs, of course 😉)

📥 Step 1: Download & Unzip Your Files

When you purchase a digital SVG, you’ll receive a .zip file.
Right-click the file and choose Extract All to access the SVG, PNG, DXF, and EPS versions.

💡 Pro Tip: Always use the SVG file for cutting — not the PNG or JPEG!

📁 Step 2: Open Cricut Design Space

  1. Click New Project

  2. Click Upload

  3. Choose your SVG file

  4. Give it a name and tag it for future use

  5. Click “Add to Canvas”

You should now see your SVG design on the mat!

✂️ Step 3: Resize, Customize & Make It

  • Resize your SVG to fit your blank (shirt, cup, sign, etc.)

  • Click “Make It”

  • Follow on-screen prompts to cut your material

Don’t forget to mirror your design if using HTV (heat transfer vinyl)!

💖 Step 4: Weed & Transfer

After your Cricut cuts the design:

  • Use a weeding tool to remove excess vinyl

  • Apply to your project using heat or adhesive

Done! You just brought a digital file to life 🎉
